Heritage

A Living History

1885

Constructed by John Thomas Robinson, The Alpine Retreat Hotel first opened its doors as a waypoint for travellers heading into the Upper Yarra Valley. The property initially passed to Mr. J. C. Wildman, who managed it from 1889 until 1903, before ownership transitioned to Mrs. Alice Ann Leith.

1908

Significant expansions under Mr. R. Leith added a two-storey wing with 18 rooms, a large dining room, kitchen, laundry, and service spaces – all designed on modern lines for the era.

1936

A new brick facade and the iconic Red Lounge were added by Mr. W. G. Leith, along with guest rooms above and brick staff quarters and garages – cementing The Alpine's reputation as one of the premier country hotels in the region.

Today

Over the decades, The Alpine Retreat Hotel has undergone numerous interior and exterior upgrades while preserving its heritage character. Today it stands as a beloved destination where 140 years of history meets modern comfort.

After attending the awards as finalists last year, receiving this recognition in 2026 is an incredibly special milestone for our team.

The AHA Awards are considered the benchmark for excellence in Victoria’s hospitality industry, celebrating venues that deliver outstanding food, service and guest experiences across the state. This year, the Alpine was recognised alongside some of Victoria’s most respected hospitality venues.

For us, this award is about far more than great food. It reflects the dedication of our kitchen team, front-of-house staff, housekeepers, suppliers, local producers, musicians and the wider community that continues to support the Alpine.

From the beginning, our goal has been to create more than just a pub. We wanted the Alpine to be a place that feels warm, welcoming and worth returning to — a venue where locals and visitors alike can enjoy great food, genuine hospitality and the best of what the Yarra Valley has to offer.

We’re incredibly grateful to our team, whose hard work and passion make experiences like this possible every day, and to our guests who choose to spend their time with us.

While we’re honoured by this recognition, we’re even more excited about what’s ahead. We remain committed to showcasing local produce, supporting live music and creating memorable experiences for everyone who walks through our doors.

Thank you for being part of the journey.

Come visit us.

Whether you're stopping in for a meal, staying the night, or celebrating a milestone – we'd love to welcome you.
