Constructed in 1885 by John Thomas Robinson, The Alpine Retreat Hotel initially passed into the hands of Mr. J. C. Wildman, who managed the property from 1889 until 1903. Subsequent ownership transitioned to Mrs. Alice Ann Leith.
Significant expansions occurred under the tenure of Mr. R. Leith in 1908, featuring a two-story addition with 18 rooms and auxiliary spaces such as a large dining room, kitchen, laundry, and smaller rooms, all designed on modern lines.
In 1936, further enhancements were made, including the addition of a brick front and more extensive works. Mr. W. G. Leith contributed by adding a new lounge room, known as the Red Lounge, complete with guest accommodations above. Outdoor improvements included brick staff rooms and garages.
Over the years, The Alpine Retreat Hotel has seen numerous interior and exterior upgrades, cements its reputation as one of the premier country hotels in the region.
